Strictly's Emma Weymouth spent £60K on surrogate after nearly dying in childbirth

Strictly Come Dancing star Viscountess Emma Weymouth has revealed she spent £60,000 on a surrogate to have her second child after nearly dying during her first pregnancy.

The 33-year-old suffered a bleed on the brain during the third trimester of her pregnancy with son John, now aged five.

The ordeal was so traumatic for her and her aristocrat husband that they opted for a surrogate for their second son Henry, 2.

Speaking to The Sunday Times magazine, the celebrity chef revealed she suffers from hypophysitis, a rare condition which results in acute or chronic inflammation of the pituitary gland or pituitary stalk.

Viscountess Emma said: "I couldn't get out of bed, I couldn't move, I couldn't breathe."

"I had a bleed on my brain. The doctor's trying to save my life, and I'm trying to save my baby."

The star opted to fork out a small fortune for an American surrogate for her second child as “putting my own life at risk is not an option”.

She and her husband Caewlin Thynn, also a chef, were both present for Henry’s birth.

Emma and Caewlin married in 2013, with their nuptials sending ripples through the British aristocracy.

Emma is currently taking part in Strictly Come Dancing with pro dancer Aljaz Skorjanec (BBC/Guy Levy)

Caewlin, 45, is the son of Alexander Thynn, 7th Marquess of Bath.

Their marriage made Emma, who is the daughter of an English socialite and a Nigerian oil magnate, the chatelaine of the Longleat Estate and will go on to be the first black marchioness in British history.
