Strictly's Dan Walker forced to wake up at ludicrous time and has pulled 'all-nighters'

Everyone knows you have to give up your life to appear on Strictly Come Dancing - but spare a thought for Dan Walker.

The BBC Breakfast presenter was already enduring a rather gruelling routine even before he took to the dance floor.

So now the problem is even worse thanks to agonisingly long days in the training room with pro dance partner Nadia Bychkova, who even snapped Dan asleep on the floor during a break.

For the last five years, the former Football Focus host has been lighting up our screens at the crack of dawn alongside the likes of Louise Minchin and Naga Munchetty.

With that fear inducing 6am start on the telly, Dan has been forced to set his alarm for 3.11am for the last few years.

But he still struggles to get enough sleep to cope with that excruciatingly early start and has been known to pull an "all-nighter" and not got to bed at all.

"I just have peanut butter on toast at half 5, and a cup of tea. And that’s my one cup of tea for the day and then I’ll drink water after that. Nothing else," he told The Mirror in 2019.

When Dan replaced veteran BBC Breakfast host Bill Turnbull in 2016 he was given just one bit of advice - manage you sleep.

"And foolishly, I’ve entirely ignored Mr Turnbull," continued Dan. "So, I sleep for about four and a half hours for the first half of the week. Louise sleeps a lot more than me.

"I don’t know quite how, but I’ve managed to survive because in my head, I always think, ‘Well, I’ve got some other days where I’ve been doing normal hours, so I’ll just recover then.’"

Cheeky Dan has been known to stay up all night then go to work on the famous red sofa without a wink of sleep.

"Occasionally, don’t tell my boss, but very rarely I do pull an all-nighter, because in my head I convince myself I have to do it for research purposes," he explained.

"But I hate missing out on things, so when the Masters is on, which is always a really late finish on the Sunday night, I watch that, and when Danny Willett won it I may have stayed up all night."

The 44-year-old has been struggling to balance Strictly training with his extremely early starts as he has been carrying on with his regular TV duties.

The problem got so bad at the start of the series that Dan was caught lying on the hard wooden floor of his training room.

Pointing the finger at Nadia, Dan joked that his dance partner had "broken" him and confessed he had fallen asleep due to exhaustion.

"She actually broke me yesterday," he wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of him lying motionless on the floor with a rather odd shoes and socks combo.

He added: "I got down there to stretch and I was long gone. 3am starts got me in the end."

As well as finding the moment hilarious, Nadia admitted it was the "sweetest thing" and revealed she hadn't realised he was in the land of nod so was still talking to him

Nadia also addressed Dan's commitment to rehearsals during a recent interview on GMB - and admitted he still isn't sleeping much.

"Your confidence is growing, you're believing in yourself more and that's what this show is all about," she told Dan. "I'm just enjoying every day teaching this man how to dance

"I love the work ethic he has, he gives 100 per cent, he's focused. It's not easy at all but he's giving his all. He doesn't really sleep much but he works really hard, he never complains."

*Strictly Come Dancing airs tonight on BBC One at 7.05pm
