Strictly's Dan Walker and Nadiya share secret code they use to survive intense training

Dan Walker has started his gruelling training regime as he gears up for his first Strictly Come Dancing performance this weekend.

The BBC Breakfast presenter, 44, will take to the dance floor with professional partner Nadiya Bychkova on Saturday night to perform the quick step.

Ahead of their performance, the duo have shared their secrets to surviving strict rehearsals - including how Nadiya checks that Dan is in the right position.

In a video over on his Instagram, Dan says: "We are, as you well know, we are getting ready for the quick step on Saturday night.

"And to give you a little training room secret, we've got some words that Nadiya Bychkova, professional dance partner shouts during the dance to get me into the right position."

Giggling at her partner, Nadiya explained: "I do, keywords 'stretchy boss, captain, fish fingers.'"

In response, Dan said: "Now I won't explain them all, because they are top secret aren't they, we don't want anyone else to know about them."

He then placed his hand in front of the camera and continued: "But fish fingers relates to the position of the right hand on the top of Nadia's back, so we don't want the fish and we don't want the fingers, what we want is fish fingers."

Meanwhile, his professional partner nodded in agreement in the background as she reassured Dan.

The journalist might be lucky when it comes to scoring on the BBC One show, as he revealed he is good friends with head judge Shirley Ballas.

The pair have been mates since 2019 after they climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania together for Comic Relief.

He said: "We had some great conversations on that trip. I really got to know her well. I'm looking forward to seeing her.

"We've had a few Kilimanjaro reunions. She's great, talented and knows what she is talking about."

Some think that he will get extra marks from Shirley when he takes to the dance floor.

But he doesn't think that this will be the case as he said: "On one particular occasion Shirley was feeling a bit down and a bit upset, so I nicked one of the blankets we were using to keep warm at night and I did a bit of impromptu pasodoble.

"She laughed her head off, which I'm not sure is the best thing. I questioned whether I would've got a 10 but she continued to laugh, so I'm not sure the technique was great. But it had the desired effect of making her laugh."

*Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
