Strictly Come Dancing's Clara Amfo left 'gutted' as live audience is axed

Strictly's Clara Amfo has told that she's "gutted" the BBC have had to scrap the studio audience during the live shows.

Now that lockdown 2.0 is in effect, a live audience is no longer an option for the Beeb's flagship show.

And Clara, who's partnered with pro Aljaz Skorjanec, even had showbiz mates coming to watch.

Appearing on BBC One's Morning Show, the Radio 1 DJ told that pal Nick Grimshaw and his boyfriend were supposed to be coming to cheer her on.

"I won't lie, we were all a little bit gutted," admitted Clara. "Having your friends and family to cheer you on really adds to the experience, but I think the main thing is that the show itself is still on.

"That's what we're all extremely happy about - the show brings so much joy to so many people, particularly this year, I think we've needed it more than ever - I know that's the reason why I said yes, please let me just dance it out. The escapism.

"I'm obviously gutted. Nick Grimshaw, who I love and is one of my bestest pals, he was supposed to come this weekend with his boyfriend - and I knew they were really excited.

"But they'll be watching and cheering from home like everybody else. The show is still on so I think that's what we're all super happy about."

Sunday's show saw Jacqui Smith and Anton du Beke become the first couple eliminated this series.

Meanwhile, series youngsters HRVY and Maisie Smith are the current favourites to lift the Glitterball Trophy.

Both stars have impressed the judges, with Maisie and partner Gorka Marquez topping the leaderboard after Saturday's 80s-themed show.

Meanwhile, 2020 marks Strictly history with its first same-sex competing couple.

Olympic boxing champ Nicola Adams has been taking to the floor with Katya Jones, sitting pretty at third following the weekend's dance.

Fans breathed a sigh of relief earlier this year when the BBC confirmed Strictly would be going ahead despite Covid raising doubts.

*Strictly returns to BBC One on Saturday at 7:25pm.
