Strictly Gethin's gone

If you wondered what that strange noise was last night, it was the sound of a million young hearts being broken as Gethin Jones, formerly known as that bloke off Blue Peter, was kicked off Strictly Come Dancing. There wasn't a dry eye on the sofa.

Ah, what an epic, as the three best dancers in this year's competition - Alesha Dixon, Matt di Angelo and our Gethin - competed for just two places in the final.

It was Gethin's bad luck that he chose Saturday's semi-final to put in one of his more lacklustre performances, while Matt - who really should have gone last week after completely forgetting his routine - conjured up his best effort of the series with a perfect 40. Yes, even Craig gave him a 10.

With Alesha voted straight through to the final, it was down to Matt and Gethin in last night's dance-off, but only Arlene voted to keep the Blue Peter man. Gethin is gone.

Which is a shame because Gethin's transformation was one of the best things about Strictly Come Dancing. It is hard to remember the early weeks of the competition when he looked like a fish out of water, almost as unsuited to the dance floor as Brian Capron. Well, almost.

But by the time of his Argentine Tango last night, Jones had all the confidence and poise of a professional dancer. So much so that I thought he should have stayed in. But what do I know?

Sure, Matt - he's from EastEnders - has got a lot better too, but he ain't no Gethin. Just ask the woman who sits next to me on the sofa, who turns into a gibbering wreck every time the Welsh chap appears on screen. Click here for some seriously BLUE Peter.

Apparently I look a bit like him from a distance. About five miles.

While you admire my superb comic timing, I should also mention that m'learned colleague Anna Pickard will be live blogging along with the final this Saturday. And if you don't watch Strictly - haha, yeah, right - you can talk X Factor final here.
