Strictly fans react to Tess Daly's 'Wigan' comment following John Whaite's performance

Wigan was placed firmly on the map on Saturday night's Strictly Come Dancing as John Whaite took to the dance floor with Johannes Radebe for their second performance of the series.

John, who won the third series of the Great British Bake Off in 2012, triumphed again as the pair danced a super-slick cha cha to Starstruck by Years and Years on the BBC dance show.

As they left the dancefloor they were met by host Tess Daly, from Stockport, who mentioned his home town.

One viewer said they were 'taken aback' by the comment.

"What is your issue with Wigan Tess? you are a northern girl," they tweeted.

"Quite taken aback with that comment. He is a great dancer and baker."

And another remarked: "Tess - someone from Wigan doing the cha cha isn’t a novelty! Northerners dance too!"

Other fans of the show also mentioned Wigan in their warm praise of the 32-year-old's dance prowess.

"Stunning. Love Johannes but John from Wigan is a pure pet. Adore," said one.

"Me and my mum ring each other for a bit of strictly goss while we watch it every week and I can’t seem to mention John without going 'he’s from Wigan you know!'" said another.

"John (from Wigan) and Johannes radiate so much joy and it’s wonderful to see #Strictly," said another.

And other fans are saying John and Johannes, who are making history as the long-running show's first all-male pairing, are the ones to watch.

"Not me literally tearing up when they dance," said one.

"This years winners right there," another commented.

"Well done that was such a happy dance!" said another.

And another tweeted: "Love how my 6 year son doesn’t question two men dancing together and they’re his favourite."

There was a big surprise for the pair as Years and Years singer Ollie Alexander popped up on a big screen to thank them for picking his song for the cha cha.

"I absolutely love you guys," he told them.

"I'm so happy you're in this competition. Keep killing it."
