Strictly fans question 'ironic' choice of song for opening routine amid lockdown

Strictly Come Dancing 2020 viewers were ecstatic to have the BBC One series back on screens on Saturday night.

Following strict government guidelines amid the coronavirus pandemic, the celebrities and professional dancers put on quite the show.

The opening performance on the show moved many to tears, as some got emotional by the sense of "normality" that came with the show's return.

But not everyone was moved, especially after watching the bumper performance by the pros to open the show.

The dancers including Oti Mabuse, Janette Manrara and Gorka Marquez performed a stunning routine, which started on a beach and then moved to the Strictly ballroom.

It merged the songs Everybody's Free by Rozalla, and Free by Ultra Nate.

The lyrics included lines such as "cause you're free, to do what you want to do" and "everybody's free to feel good".

Several viewers saw the "irony" in this though, given Saturday saw several parts of the country move into the new Tier lockdown system to help stop the spread of Covid-19.

As many parts of the country including London and Essex moved into Tier two, stopping the mixing of separate households in any indoor place, other places faced the tougher restrictions of Tier three.

As the stunning performances aired on Strictly, many weren't all that impressed suggesting the songs were not the right choice for the current climate.

While many looked past this and appreciated the dancing, others took to Twitter to call out Strictly directly.

Viewers mocked the 'ironic' choice of song (BBC)

One viewer wrote: "Tonight’s #Strictly began with a pro routine to ‘Everybody’s Free’. You been watching the news this year, pal?"

Another said: "You're free to do what you want to do' how ironic."

A third tweeted: "'Everyone’s free to do what they want to do' > Odd song choice for the opening number of #Strictly @BBCOne?!"

Meanwhile, a fourth commented: "So the opening of #StrictlyComeDancing features them telling us 'you're free to do what you want to do' just as lockdowns take effect across the country..."

This was echoed by another fan who wrote: "Catching up on #strictly! Really is that the choice of song you are going to open with! 'You’re free time do what you want to do' Not right now we’re not!!!"

The comments kept coming too, with another saying: "Are the BBC trolling us? I don’t feel free to do what I want to do," followed by: " #Strictly 'you're free to do what you want to do' strange timing..."

Many viewers were moved by the performance though, as one fan tweeted: " #Strictly is back and I am EMOTIONAL. Emotional that we are seeing the arts return, emotional that these dancers get to return to their jobs, emotional that the musicians all get to play together again and SO EMOTIONAL that we have a same sex couple and all that visibility."

Another said: "Anyone else emotional about a bit of normality? Nearly cried when I saw Craig #strictly."

A third added: "OMG I’m so emotional about #Strictly being on again!"

Strictly Come Dancing kicks off the 2020 competition next Saturday at 7:25pm on BBC One.
