Strictly fans baffled as Shirley praises deaf contestant Rose for 'blocking out noise'

Strictly Come Dancing fans were moved by another powerful performance from show favourites Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice in Saturday night's live show (December 4).

They charmed fans with their American Smooth to This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) by Natalie Cole.

The dance included a daring 'leap of faith' by Rose into Giovanni's arms.

But as the praise came pouring in afterwards fans were baffled by head judge Shirley Ballas' comment about Rose, who is the celeb dance contest's first deaf contestant, praising her for 'blocking out' the noise in the studio.

Shirley's comment confused fans (BBC)

She said: "Rhys went on before you. There was lots of noise. Clapping.

"You came in, you blocked it out and you delivered the performance of a lifetime."

Fans took to Twitter to air their confusion.

@holly_56789 asked: "Did Shirley really praise Rose for being able to block out all the clapping and noise? She’s literally deaf?!"

@GeorgiaEH17 questioned: "She blocked out the noise Shirley?"

@DeborahJBall1 asked: "Seriously Shirley? Did you just say Rose blocked the noise out???"

Rose performed a daring leap (BBC)

@morganmacfie tweeted: "Shirley talking about there being lots of noise and clapping after Rhys had danced and Rose blocking it out… she is literally deaf Shirley????"

And @eastenders_plus asked: "Did Shirley just say to Rose 'you blocked all the noise out.'"

Last month there wasn't a dry eye in the Strictly studio after Rose and Giovanni Pernice performed a very special routine on the hit BBC One show

To pay respect and raise awareness for members of the deaf community, the music was cut and the pair continued to dance in silence as part of a spellbinding routine to the Clean Bandit featuring Zara Larsson song Symphony.

The EastEnders star and her pro partner delivered a first for the show and it was hailed as Strictly's greatest ever performance.

Rose, from Manchester, is hoping to 'break sterotypes' on Strictly.

She said after she was announced for the show: "To be the first deaf contestant on Strictly Come Dancing is sooooo exciting.. and a little bit scary.

"It is the hardest secret I have ever had to keep so it feels amazing to finally have this out in the open! I hope I will do the deaf community proud and break down more barriers."

The star uses a hearing aid, so can pick up some of the music and can hear the beat as well as feel the vibrations from the live band led by Dave Arch through the dancefloor at the show's Elstree studios.

Rose also focuses on reading her partner's body language plus counting in her head to help with timing.

The star is best known to viewers for playing Frankie Lewis in EastEnders.

The 27-year-old, who uses British Sign Language (BSL), joined the BBC soap in 2020 as the secret daughter of Mick Carter, played by Danny Dyer.
