Strictly curse is very real says Debbie McGee after string of 'near-kisses' wow fans

Strictly Come Dancing is only its fifth week and already the rumour mill is churning with tales of romance.

Giovanni Pernice broke up with his partner Maura Higgins days before Saturday's show, sparking speculation the so-called 'Strictly Curse' had stuck again.

Then the week before, viewers were left rewinding their TV sets after Adam Peaty appeared to lean in to kiss his professional dance partner Katya Jones after their steamy Argentine Tango.

The swimmer, who has a son with his current long-term girlfriend, later hit out and said he would not be 'lowered or overcome by gossip.'

A week later and it was AJ Odudu and Kai Widdringtons turn to hit the headlines with their tango as the pair, who are both single, ended their routine in a very close hold.

AJ later laughed off the incident and joked about munching smelly crisps prior to the performance, but insiders have claimed the duo are getting close backstage.

According to former contestant Debbie McGee, the Strictly curse is 'very real'.

"The Strictly curse does seem to be a thing," Debbie mused. "People have affairs in all walks of life and it's usually with the person that they're spending the most amount of time with.

"And because Strictly is televised and watched by so many, the 'curse' has become a really big deal.

"Dancing can be very emotional and if there's a lot of chemistry between you and your dance partner, then I can see how it happens," she told Closer magazine.

Debbie, 62, is no stranger to Strictly curse rumours herself.

During her time on the show in 2017, viewers poured over her relationship with Giovanni Pernice, after observing their incredible connection on and off the dance floor.

At the time Debbie, who was married to magician Paul Daniels, denied anything was going on and said she was too busy focusing on nailing her routines to notice if the Sicilian was making the moves on her.

"There's no time in your life when Strictly is on so I have no idea." Debbie laughed when quizzed on the speculation.

Giovanni always spoke very highly of Debbie and nicknamed her 'Flexi McGee' after she performed a perfect splits at their very first meeting.

"She did the kick, and I instantly thought, ‘This is going to be amazing thank you so much for Flexi McGee, I’m going to be having the best time of my life with you - happy days,'" gushed Giovanni.

"It’s one of those things where Christmas came early once she did the kick. I was like, [flutters eyelashes] ‘Do it again, do it again.'"

The pair made it all the way to the final that year along with Alexandra burke, Gemma Atkinson and eventual winner Joe McFadden.
