Strictly Come Dancing's launch show rakes in lowest amount of viewers in 11 years

Strictly Come Dancing has finally returned - but Saturday night's long-awaited launch episode raked in the lowest-ever number of viewers since it first came about in 2010.

The BBC One show came back with a bang, as fans of the family show watched this year's celebrities get paired up with their professional partners.

The episode drew in seven million viewers and peaked at 7.3million - but this year's figures have plummeted compared to last year's (8.6million) and the first ever pairing up episode (8.7million).

Strictly saw the highest amount of viewers in 2016, at 9.3million, while 2019 saw 7.8million tune-in.

However, a TV source told us the reason for Strictly's downfall in viewers could be down to people enjoying the last of the sunshine.

"Lots of people had been out and about enjoying the early autumn sunshine and will probably watch on catch-up today," the insider shared.

"The ratings are sure to pick up once the live shows start next weekend, and viewers get to see whether the celebs can actually dance – or not."

Last night, fans of the show were left baffled by one celebrity in particular - and his height.

BBC Breakfast's Dan Walker, who was paired up with dance partner Nadiya, shocked viewers as he made his appearance.

The 43-year-old is incredibly tall at 6ft 6, but fans of the star didn't realise his towering height as he is usually sat down on the sofa during his day job.

The journalist has even made an amusing nickname for himself, which Nadiya revealed as they sat down for a chat with Claudia Winkleman.

She told him: "Do you know what is so cute about you, Dan - when a celeb meets their pro and goes, 'Am I a terrible disappointment?'"

"I'm so happy I got Daniel," Nadiya replied.

He laughed back: "She's calling me Daniel. I feel very, sort of, talked to."

Nadiya then added: "Well, Daniel is very worried he's going to look like a daddy longlegs."

But his dance partner went on to reveal it's a good thing that he is tall, adding: "I think your long legs, that you're tall - you'll be amazing for ballroom."

Over on Twitter, fans shared their thoughts on his unexpected height.

One person wrote: "6ft 6? Dan Walker??? Damn, that breakfast sofa hides a lot but that is bloody tall. Is he taller than @richardosman? Am in shock. Am shook….. 6ft 6??? Can’t wait for see his dances now! #Strictly."

"I had no idea Dan Walker was so tall. I suppose I’ve really only seen him sitting down," a second penned.

A third commented: "How tall is Dan Walker?? My favourites already."
