Strictly Come Dancing: Past contestants with links to Merseyside

The new series of Strictly Come Dancing is set to start tonight.

15 new celebrities will be partnered with professional dancers for another round of the glitzy dance competition.

Although none of the contestants this year have strong links to Merseyside, the region has been strongly represented ever since the show debuted on back in 2004.

Local stars such as Abbey Clancy and Claire Sweeney have dazzled audiences with their routines while adopted Scousers such as John Barnes have also put in impressive performances on the BBC show.

We've rounded up all the contestants with Merseyside links ahead of season 18 starting tonight at 7:45pm on BBC One.

Claire Sweeney

The Brookside star appeared on the debut season of Strictly Come Dancing.

The Walton born actress was partnered with dancer John Byrnes and made it to the 5th week of the show before she was eliminated.

Jimmy Tarbuck

The Wavertree comedian was announced as a contestant on season 4 of Strictly Come Dancing.

The 81-year-old was partnered with Flavia Cacace but withdrew in the third week of the contest.

Matt Dawson

The retired rugby union player was born in Birkenhead and has told the ECHO in the past about how he is a massive Everton fan.

He was partnered with Lilia Kopylova in season 4 and made it all the way to the final before he was just beaten to top spot by Mark Ramprakash.

John Barnes

The legendary Liverpool player featured in season 5 of Strictly Come Dancing.

The 57-year-old was partnered with Nicole Cutler and made it to Week 8 before he was eliminated.

Jade Johnson

Jade Johnson appeared in season 7 of Strictly Come Dancing (BBC)

The retired track and trace athlete grew up in London but her parents come from Liverpool and Jamaica.

The long jumper appeared in season 7 of the show alongside Ian Waite but withdrew from the competition on Week 10.

Abbey Clancy

The Liverpool model is the region's most successful entry in Strictly Come Dancing as she emerged triumphant from the competition back in 2013.

Abbey Clancy and her partner Aljaž Škorjanec wowed judges on their way to the final and scored a perfect 40 during musicals week.

Sunetra Sarker

Strictly Come Dancing 2014 contestant Sunetra Sarker (BBC)

The Liverpool born actress is known for her performances in Brookside and for playing Zoe Hanna In Casualty.

The 48-year-old took part in season 12 of Strictly Come Dancing and was partnered with Brendan Cole. The pair made it to week 10 before they were voted out.

Simon Rimmer

The Sunday Brunch chef appeared on season 15 of Strictly Come Dancing in 2017.

The Wallasey TV personality was paired with Karen Clifton and made it to week 6 before he was eliminated.

Strictly Come Dancing starts on September 18 at 7:45pm on BBC One
