Strictly Come Dancing fans praise powerful tribute to James Bond's Sean Connery

Strictly Come Dancing paid a sweet tribute to the late Sir Sean Connery in a moving opening performance during Movie Week on Saturday.

Taking the lead were Gorka Márquez and Giovanni Pernice, who donned sharp suits for the routine.

Spanish dancer Gorka, was seen impersonating Daniel Craig in Casino Royale by going shirtless and wearing just his swimming trunks in a pre-recorded clip, before joining Giovanni in the studio.

After giving an electrifying performance to songs such as 'Live and Let Die', 'Writings on the Wall' and Billie Eilish's 'No Time to Die', Oti Mabuse concluded the segment as the iconic 007 gun barrel focused on her.

After the dance, hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daily spoke of the death of the Bond actor as they introduced the show.

"Of course we can't do a number like that without mentioning Sean Connery, the original big screen Bond who very sadly passed away last week," Tess said.

"Our thoughts go out to his family."

Fans on Twitter expressed their delight for the segment as one wrote: "I’m HERE for this new Bond #Strictly."

And another added: "That James Bond dance opener for movie week was amazing the perfect tribute to Sean Connery!

"B****y amazing pro dance on @bbcstrictly this evening. That wasn't just a #JamesBond themed dance, it was a beautiful homage to the Bond films and #NoTimeToDie, with a cheeky wink at the end with a gun barrel ending on Oti! #Strictly.

"As if today couldn’t get any better, that Bond opening routine for Strictly was awesome. And @jojo_radebe as Grace Jones was epic! #strictly #scd #SCD2020."

Connery's death was announced last weekend by son Jason, who said in a statement:

"We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time.

"A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor."
