Strictly cancels Blackpool show because of COVID-19

Strictly Come Dancing been forced to swerve its show in the iconic Blackpool Tower Ballroom because of COVID-19.

For many years the live show, towards the end of the series, has transferred from its London home at Elstree Studios to the seaside town.

It also hosted the finals of the second and the ninth series in December 2004 and 2011, won by former Coronation Street and Waterloo Road actress Jill Halfpenny and McFly drummer Harry Judd.

Blackpool has been a Strictly tradition since the BBC One dance contest began in 2004 but this year it has been called off.

A BBC spokeswoman told us: "Blackpool is a milestone moment in every series of Strictly that our audience, our celebs and professional dancers look forward to.

"Whilst we'll be unable to physically go to Blackpool this series, we'll still be celebrating this iconic venue and bringing it to life from our studio in Elstree."

Blackpool Tower is where the original Come Dancing series was filmed in the 1970s.

In 2005 the BBC announced that they would not be returning to the venue for the third series due to 'logistical problems.'

Following a campaign it returned to Blackpool for series seven in 2009.

Then after series 10, when Strictly did not go to Blackpool again, it returned for series 11.

According to reports contestants are likely to be carefully monitored with daily COVID-19 tests .

There's also likely to be no big studio audience, and instead a small table of viewers to cheer on the dancers.

The professional dancers are reportedly isolating together and the celebrity pair-ups, who have yet to be announced, are likely to form a bubble together during filming.

It's been reported that the show is due to start on Saturday October 24, instead of the usual September dates, and continue until December 19.

This year's star line-up which has already been announced includes former The Wanted singer Max George, from Bolton, and Olympic boxing champ Nicola Adams who studied at Hopwood Hall College in Middleton.
