Stretford set to become greener and safer

The large-scale transformation of Stretford town centre into a greener and safer environment has moved a step closer. Trafford Council has appointed contractor AE Yates to deliver a number of major public realm improvements in the town centre.

The works, which are expected to start on May 27, will make the town centre a place that meets the needs of local residents and businesses. As part of the improvements, Trafford council is looking to make the Kingsway and Barton Road junction safer and greener as part of its transformation of the town.

Plans include new crossing points, cycle lanes, footpaths, trees and green spaces. The Kingsway carriageway is also being re-designed to help reduce speeds and improve the space for cyclists and pedestrians.

Town hall bosses say disruption to motorists and pedestrians is expected while the work takes place and this will be managed by advance notification and signage. Coun Liz Patel, Trafford council’s executive member for economy, and regeneration, said: “Stretford town centre is being transformed into a great place for residents, shoppers, and businesses.

"These new designs will make the experience safer and more enjoyable for pedestrians and cyclists and complement the redevelopment of Stretford Mall. This is an exciting time for Stretford.”

The project, which is set to completed in September 2024, is being managed by The LK Group and supported by civic engineers, Exterior Architecture and Simon Fenton Partnership on behalf of Trafford Council.

As well as public realm improvements, major work on transforming Stretford’s King Street is also due to start in the next few weeks.
