Stretch of M8 closed after damage to bridge as police appeal for information

An appeal has been launched by police after a bridge on the M8 was closed today due to damage and debris.

At around 3.50pm today (Thursday, July 30), Police Scotland received a report of debris on the carriageway and damage to an overbridge on the motorway near junction 29a at Bishopton following major tailbacks.

Road Policing Officers attended and the motorway and the bridge were closed with a number of local diversions put in place.

Engineers attended and assessed the damaged bridg. Restrictions were lifted at around 7pm and the roads were re-opened.

Sergeant Craig Beaver of Glasgow Road Policing Unit said: “We are working to establish what has caused this damage to the bridge, and we are looking at the possibility that a heavy goods vehicle may have struck the underside of the bridge this afternoon.

“At this time I am appealing to anyone who witnessed any incident take place to contact us as soon as possible.

“Anyone with information should contact Glasgow Road Policing Unit based at Govan through 101 quoting incident number 2085 of 30th July."
