'Stressed' banker stabs wife and kids, 4 and 7, to death before killing himself

A 'stressed' banker stabbed his wife and two young children to death in their home before killing himself.

Police officers found the bodies of dad Chuan-Kai (Tom) Liu, 46, his wife Dorothy, 42, and their two kids - Tennyson, seven, and Adeline, four - after the children failed to show up for school.

There were no previous reports of domestic violence at the family home in the town of Pleasantville in upstate New York, according to police.

Detectives were still trying to establish a motive for the triple murder and suicide, but police Chief Eric Grutzner told reporters that Liu was "under a considerable amount of stress".

Liu worked as a project manager and business analyst at MUFG, a Japanese bank and financial services company with an office in a Manhattan tower.

The bodies were discovered in the Liu family home on Thursday after the children's school raised the alarm.

Chief Grutzner said: "Evidence strongly suggests that Mr Liu used a knife to cause the death of his wife and children and then used that same knife to take his own life.

"While we do not have a motive, interviews indicate that Mr Liu was under a considerable amount of stress.

"There are no reports of domestic violence at the family home."

He added: "Throughout the entirety of this investigation, the only information we found was that they were a wonderful, involved set of parents with two incredibly active and amazing children."

Police gained access to the home through an open door.

MUFG said in a statement: "We are greatly saddened by the tragic loss of Tom Liu and his family.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to their family, friends and colleagues during this most difficult time.

"We are working to support our employees affected by this tragedy in any way we can."

The Lius had moved to Pleasantville from Queens in New York City in October 2016.

They had friends in the area, about 30 miles north of Manhattan, and thought it would give their children more time to play outdoors, a former neighbour, Gloria Taplin, told the New York Post.

Ms Taplin said the family had just recently visited Mrs Liu's parents, who live in the same block of flats in Queens, for Thanksgiving.

She added: "I can’t believe it. They weren’t troubled at all.

“I just spoke to [Mrs Liu’s] mother and father. They just saw them for Thanksgiving. Oh God, I can’t believe this. I can’t believe this. They weren’t troubled folks not at all."
