Streets turn blue and white in honour of Everton fan, 11, who went to sleep and didn't wake up

The streets were awash in blue and white for the funeral of an Everton-mad 11-year-old who suddenly died in his sleep.

Talented Widnes FC footballer Alfie Humphreys died last month and was found by his mum after he didn't wake up.

The Church of St Michael with St Thomas - where the funeral service was held - was decorated in Everton colours, as were the surrounding streets in Alfie's home town of Widnes, Cheshire.

Everton FC issued the family with special strips, scarves and flags for neighbours, as the family were unable to visit the Everton store because of lockdown restrictions.

Following his death, a flood of tributes were paid to the Ormiston Chadwick Academy schoolboy and thousands raised in his memory by the close-knit club.

At this stage it is not clear what caused Alfie's death.

Paying tribute to her son last month, Alfie's mum Nicola Whitfield said: "He was such a lovely boy and he had a heart of gold, and I know everyone says that about their children, but he would have done anything for anyone, especially me.

"He'd have done anything for me, absolutely anything. He was my best friend."

Nicola, 35, said Alfie, from Widnes, had started high school in September and was loving school, despite not being able to be physically there as much this year in lockdown.

The Everton -mad schoolboy was devoted to his family and dearly loved his mum and dad, Wayne Humphreys, 43, as well as stepdad Harry Pierce, and was a brilliant older brother to Dylan, Charlie, Riley and Jamie.

Stepmum Lisa Barton said Alfie was a well-loved figure in the community and used to love playing football outside with his siblings.

Since Alfie's death, a gofundme page on behalf of Widnes FC for Alfie and the family has raised a total of £25,427.

A tribute to Alfie also featured in Everton's home game against Southampton on March 1, in front of millions.
