Streets of Scots town flooded as country hit by heavy downpours

The streets of a Scots town have been badly flooded as an expected deluge of rain begins to hit Scotland.

A dramatic social media picture posted on the Fife Jammer Locations Facebook page shows the waterlogged road in Kincardine, Fife.

Scots have been warned of flood risks across the country as the recent heatwave gives way to rain and thunderstorms over the next few days.

The lashing of water comes as both lanes of a busy Scots motorway have been closed and speed restrictions introduced for trains in certain areas.

Drivers on the M9 are being urged to be careful at Junction 8 northbound, just after the M876 cutoff, according to Traffic Scotland.

Some 15 flood alerts were issued across Scotland by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).

Two amber weather warnings for thunderstorms were also put in place by the Met Office until 11.59pm on Tuesday.

Forecasters predict 120mm of rain could fall in some locations, which is almost double the Met Office average July rainfall total for Scotland at 83.55.

The Met Office yellow weather warning for thunderstorms will impact Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, Highlands and the Western Isles, south-west Scotland, Lothian Borders and Strathclyde.

Another yellow weather warning for rain is in place for the same areas until Thursday, with 'heavy and persistent' downpours expected.

ScotRail have announced there will be speed restrictions on a number of lines due to the weather.
