The area was cordoned off and pictures taken shortly afterwards showed a Royal Logistics Corps bomb disposal unit at the scene.

According to reports, the device was found in the front garden of an address in Birtles Road.

A nearby resident said: "People in the area have been told to stay in their back gardens. Some have been evacuated."

Warrington Police posted on their Twitter account: "Please be aware we currently have cordon in place around the Birtles Road area due to reports of a device being found.

"The area has been cordoned off as a precaution and EOD are at the scene to make an assessment."
