Street sealed off as building crumbles in South Ayrshire

A street has been sealed off in Ayr after chunks of a building fell off.

The police taped off the pedestrianised lane (pictured above) leading on to the High Street to protect the public.

Bits of broken masonry landed on the ground across from Boots  near the spot where the fruit seller stall operates.

The debris, which fell from the building housing Slater Menswear (below) has now been lifted.

A tattoo business  has also been based in the building in the past.

Temporary fencing has now been erected around the unsafe area and the road is open again this afternoon.

A South Ayrshire Council spokeswoman said: "Our Buildings Standard team investigated a report, that some marble cladding had fallen from a building in the lane between Mill Wynd and High Street, Ayr. There are no reports of any injuries and fencing has been put up by the council as a precaution. Discussions have taken place with the owners of the building so that required repairs can be carried out."

The route would normally be thronged with people buying fruit or walking into town from across the river pre lockdown.

It is the latest Ayr property to crumble.

The Royal Hotel in Kyle Street has also been fenced after been branded dangerous. South Ayrshire Council served a Dangerous Building Notice on the structure and carried out emergency work after the owner failed to act in time. Kyle Street was closed off for a day in August to allow a crane into the area.

Last year the town's High Street shut to vehicles when masonry dropped from the former Savers store. The council owned bulding may end up being demolished.
