Street remains sealed off as police comb scene after late night gun blasts

A street remained cordoned off this morning as police continued to probe the second gun attack in South Sefton since Christmas Day.

Shots were fired on Harrington Road in Litherland on Tuesday night, an incident that followed a gun attack less than a mile away on Sunday.

No-one was injured in either attack.

Forensic enquiries were launched after reports of a shooting at around 10.30pm last night.

Harrington Road was cordoned off, with residents having heard as many as three gunshots.

Merseyside Police confirmed the force had found evidence shots were fired but said there had been no reported injuries.

On Wednesday morning the investigation appeared to be focused on a patch of grass and the surrounding footpaths that run between homes on Harrington Road and Anderson Road.

Speaking on Tuesday night, Detective Inspector Steve Ball said: "Firing a weapon in a residential area is incredibly reckless and thankfully nobody appears to have been injured.

“We will act on all information provided to find those responsible and remove them and their weapons from our communities.”

The shooting came just days after a gun was fired on Thackeray Gardens in Bootle.

That incident saw three men who were stood on the balcony shot at from the pavement below at around 11pm on Sunday.

Three men have since been arrested on suspicion of money laundering and around £3,000 in cash was seized by officers at the scene.

The attack on Harrington Road comes almost nine months after a fatal shooting on the same street. Michael Rainsford, 20, was killed when a gun was fired at a home on the road in April.

Two men have been charged with murder in connection to that investigation.
