KANCHANABURI - Racing teenage motorcyclists scattered in panic when they saw a police checkpoint up ahead, and one who doubled back was hit and killed by an oncoming trailer truck, in Tha Muang district early on Wednesday.

The bloodied body of Kritsana Padungwong, 18, was lying on the road when police and rescue workers arrived at Saeng Chutor Road in tambon Wang Sala around midnight, Pol Capt Watchara Thongdonpho, deputy investigation chief at Tha Muang, said on Wednesday.

Many teen racers had gathered about 40 metres away. The young victim's mother was also there, in tears.

The victim’s motorcycle was trapped under the front left wheel of the 18-wheeler. Truck driver Sodsai Pumpuang, 44, was waiting for police at the scene.

Investigators reported that youths mounted on about 20 motorcycles were racing on the road before the crash. One of them shouted there was a police checkpoint ahead, so they all fled back up the road.

Kritsana followed them, but fled right into the path of an oncoming 18-wheel trailer truck and smashed into it, police said.

The investigation was continuing.
