Street locked down after 'woman seen holding meat cleaver' at window of house

A street in east Manchester was cordoned after a woman was seen holding a knife at the window of a house.

The drama unfolded on Ewan Street, off Chapman Street in Gorton, early this morning (Friday).

Police said they were called "to reports of concern for the welfare of a woman at an address" just after 7am.

Neighbours said a distressed woman was seen shouting to police officers from a front upstairs window.

They said she was holding a knife, which looked like a meat cleaver.

The street was taped off at both ends and that a number of police cars and paramedic vehicles, including an ambulance, were scrambled to the scene.

Residents said officers spent 45 minutes to an hour negotiating with the woman.

It is believed officers went into the house through a back door.

No one was hurt.
