Street in Ayr closed off after stonework from a tenement begins to crumble onto the road

A street in Ayr was closed off after stonework began to crumble from a tenement building.

Extreme weather conditions has seen rain batter properties across town for over a fortnight.

And one flat on Fort Street couldn’t take it anymore as its brickwork began to crumble onto the road last night.

Police were called out after rubble was seen dropping from the tenement.

Officers worked with structural engineers to secure the area but were forced to close off the road late into the night until they deemed it safe to the public.

The area affected remains fenced off.

A police spokesperson said: “We can confirm receiving a report of stonework crumbling from a tenement building in Fort Street yesterday.

“This has resulted in the area concerned being fenced off as a precaution.

“The roadway had been closed for a short time to facilitate this.”

This comes after Ayr High Street was closed off after a building just 350 yards away began to crumble last month.

Parts of masonry fell from the five-story building, formally the site of Savers, forcing the road shut for three days.
