A man is in in hospital with serious injuries after a fight broke out on a Merseyside street during the early hours of this morning.
The violent scenes happened in Newton-le-Willows at around 3am.
The ugly scenes saw two men involved in what police said was an "altercation on Water Street".
One of those involved, a 24-year-old man, was taken to hospital after being assaulted and left with "serious injuries" as a result of the "appalling attack" confirmed Merseyside Police.
A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attack and forensics officers have attended the scene.
A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We have arrested a man following an incident in Newton-le-Willows in the early hours of this morning.
"At around 3am, we received reports that two men were involved in an altercation on Water Street, Newton-le-Willows.
"Emergency services attended and a 24-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries."
The spokesperson added: "A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 Assault. He was taken into custody and will be questioned by police."

Witnesseses are urged to come forward.
Detective Inspector Leanne Hobin said: “This was an appalling attack leaving a man hospitalised with serious injuries.
“I would like to reassure the community that we have one man in custody and the investigation is ongoing.”
