Street artists to roll out Billy McNeill posters again in Celtic legend tribute

A group of Celtic supporters who made headlines in 2017 for flyposting Glasgow with images of Hoops legend Billy McNeill are looking to re-plaster the city in his image following his death.

As Celtic celebrated 50 years since they won the European Cup in May of 2017, 50 large posters of the iconic image of the ex Celtic captain hoisting aloft the European Cup appeared on various walls and buildings across the city in remembrance of their victory against Inter Milan.

The guerrilla street art collection could be found outside Celtic Park and the Barrowlands, Glasgow University, Eglinton Toll and underneath the motorway at the Marriot Hotel.

The identity behind the posters was unknown, but a Twitter hashtag #Cesar67 was created to track each poster with users reporting in with photos when one was discovered.

Tributes pour in for Celtic legend Billy McNeill

And with Billy McNeill's passing, the folk who put up the posters in Dublin want to return his image to the streets of Glasgow the night before the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden on May 25 between Celtic and Hearts in tribute.

They tweeted out: "To celebrate the life of King Billy, looking at printing 100 odd of these to give out for free, to plaster city centre and route to Hampden the night before the cup final just trying to see people’s thoughts."

And with the idea having been met with a high volume of positive responses, those behind the Dublin posters told Glasgow Live:

"We are coming over for the final thought it was something we could do in memory of Billy but it’s become bigger than we expected and will now also be used to raise money for charity."
