A woman is fighting for life after being struck by a police van while it was responding to a 999 call in south London.

The marked police van hit the female pedestrian in Streatham High Road shortly before midday on Tuesday.

A picture posted on Twitter by a witness showed a police van and at least two police cars and an ambulance at the scene, which had been cordoned off.

In a statement, the Met Police said: “At approximately 11:55hrs on Tuesday, 7 May a marked police van was in collision with a female pedestrian in Streatham High Road, near the junction with Gracefield Road, SW16.

“London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended. A woman was taken to a west London hospital where her condition is currently deemed critical.

“The van was responding to an emergency call at the time of the collision.”

Transport for London said 11 bus routes were diverted because of road closures following the incident.

It tweeted just before 5pm that Streatham High Road had reopened northbound but remained closed southbound from the junction with Leigham Court Road.

Police said enquiries into the circumstances of the collision continue.
