A man is fighting for life after a "serious assault" in south London.

The 42-year-old was attacked on Streatham High Road, near the junction with Ambleside Avenue, in the early hours of Saturday.

Police said a suspect ran from the scene following the attack, which took place around 2am.

The victim was taken to hospital where his condition is described as critical.

Investigating officer, DS Rob Merrett, said: “I want to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicion, or who witnessed the assault.

"A lone suspect, believed to be a white man, ran from the scene north along the High Road, and I want to hear from anyone who may have seen that man.”

There have been no arrests.

Witnesses are asked to call 101 quoting CAD 942/jul11 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously.
