A man has been rushed hospital after a suspected acid attack in a high street in south-west London.

Police were called to Streatham High Road after receiving reports of a man being assaulted at about 2.35pm.

Officers were told he was squirted with a “noxious substance”, with witnesses claiming the incident happened near JD Sport.

Scotland Yard said: “Officers and London Ambulance Service attended the scene and a man received treatment before being taken to a south London hospital as a precaution.”

A 37-year-old, who asked not to give his name, said he was working next door to where the attack happened and said he saw a "commotion" outside.

He said: "We saw it, we were standing here and we could see some commotion.

"There was a man, I’d say in his early 20s, who was shouting at a JD Sports worker. The JD guy wasn’t doing really doing anything, he was just trying to get back to the shop.

"He [man in early 20s] had something in his hand, like a bottle of water or something. He walked away and then I didn’t see what happened next, but then suddenly there was lots of people around the JD guy."

He added the response from emergency services was "epic", with police and paramedics arriving very quickly.

The JD worker, he said, was a regular member of staff and he believed the suspect was a man who lived locally.

Police await an update on his condition and enquiries are ongoing to confirm what liquid was used. No arrests have been made.

JD Sport has been approached for comment.
