Stream turns bright purple at Tollcross Park

A river flowing through one of Glasgow' s popular parks has suddenly turned a bright purple.

Locals walking through Tollcross Park have been left baffled and concerned by the bizarre colour change.

A video taken by Hamish Cleland shows vivid purple water running down the burn, which he said is likely due to contamination.

He has urged dog walkers in the area to keep their pets on a lead.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency said:

“Every day SEPA works to protect and enhance Scotland’s environment and takes all reports of pollution seriously.

“On Wednesday 19 August, SEPA received reports that water in Tollcross Burn was an inky black colour.

“Our officers are investigating and understand that the discolouration had ceased, until receiving reports of a purple hue in the same watercourse on Friday 21 August.

“SEPA is working to identify the source of the discolouration and is also liaising with Scottish Water, which is also investigating the matter.

“Anyone who is concerned about a potential pollution incident can report this via www.sepa.org.uk/report.”
