Stream mysteriously turns bright green in puzzling incident at Leeds beauty spot

A stream that flows through a patch of woodland popular with walkers in Leeds has suddenly turned bright green.

Gledhow Beck, which flows through Moor Allerton and into Gledhow, is a tranquil place to take a stroll in the heart of north Leeds.

However, local resident Graham Rickson noticed a distinct green colouring in the water near Gledhow Valley Road when he was out for a walk this morning.

The picture above shows the luminous water in the stream near a small tunnel that takes it underneath the road.

Nothing has been officially reported to the Environment Agency, but a spokesperson told LeedsLive that "there is no need for undue concern".

They said: "It looks like routine dye testing. It is often florescent green.

"It is not harmful to the environment or wildlife and is nothing that would cause us undue harm.

"If people spot anything they may think is wrong, they should ring our hotline on 0800 80 70 60."

This isn't the first time that people have been puzzled by bright green rivers in Leeds though.

in January this year, although it turned out to be a fluorescein dye that had been used to test for leaks in the canal.
