Stray horses are wreaking havoc in Galway housing estate, councillor warns

A large number of stray horses are wreaking havoc in a housing estate, a councillor has warned.

Fine Gael’s Frank Fahy has insisted a bye-law for the control of horses needs to be urgently brought in to save lives in Galway.

He told the Irish Mirror yesterday: “It’s a mystery to me that nobody has been killed.

“The city council have issues and the county council are involved in it because it’s in their area and some of the horses are owned by tenants of the city council because we have two halting sites there.

“If you hit a horse in a car you strike the ankles and the whole body is on the bonnet and through the windscreen because they’re generally quite leggy.

“And they come in through the roof and it’s a miracle to me that nobody has been killed.”

He added there is “regularly accidents” because horses are breaking out onto the N84 Galway to Headford Road in the Castlepark and Ballybane areas.

He highlighted the crisis at a Joint Police Committee meeting in recent days and said bye-laws are needed urgently before a “serious fatality occurs”.

Garda and local authority teams swooped to lift 35 roaming nags last year and five horses have been picked up in recent months in the Galway City area.
