Strawberry Fields shortlisted for prestigious national architecture award

Strawberry Fields is one of two Liverpool developments that have been shortlisted for a regional architectural award.

The visitor attraction, designed by Hoskins Architects, and The Gables, in Crosby, designed by DK Architects, have both been shortlisted for the North West category of Royal Institute of British Architects Awards  2020.

Strawberry Fields, the iconic Liverpool landmark, was recently transformed into a new public attraction which opened its door in September.

The site, made famous by the 1967 Beatles song, had sat derelict for 70 years prior to its restoration.

Now a popular visitor attraction, the site commemorates John Lennon's links to Strawberry Field with an exhibition, cafe, and gardens.

The glazed cafe walls walls provide views and access to woodland gardens.

The original red gates, which had not been on site since 2010, are also now on display.

Formerly a manor house in a landscape garden, the site became a children's home in 1936, with the Victorian buildings replaced in the 1970s by a purpose built home.

The Gables, in Crosby, is a new development of 30 new family houses built on a former factory site.

The Gables in Crosby has also been shortlisted for the RIBA North West Awards (Daniel Hopkinson)

The new development, made up of apartments and family houses , has been commended for its distinctive and contemporary architecture.

The distinct buildings have deep reveals, angled brick window heads and cranked roof windows giving the scheme its own unique feel.

The two Liverpool entries will face off against eight other projects from the region in a ceremony held at Liverpool's Everyman Theatre on 21 May.

The ten projects that have been shortlisted are: Strawberry Field (Liverpool), The Gables (Liverpool), Alliance Manchester Business School (Manchester), Baker Place (Manchester), Hardman Square Pavillion (Manchester), Kentmere Hall Conservation and Alteration (Cumbria), Murrays' Mills (Manchester), The Oglesby Centre at Halle St Peter's (Manchester), Windermere Jetty Museum (Lake District), and Wythenshawe Hall (Manchester).

The winner of the regional award will be considered for the RIBA National Award which will be announced this summer.
