Two huge Christmas wreaths were stolen from the iconic gates of Strawberry Field.
The site in Woolton, which was immortalised by the famous Beatles song of the same name, posted on Facebook to share the news of the theft.
In a statement, those in charge of the former Salvation Army children's home said their "lights had been dimmed" by the incident.
But with admirable understanding, they also issued a message to those responsible and offered them help in these "desperate times".
The post said: "We are disappointed to share that the Christmas wreaths from our iconic gates have been stolen.
"Our lights may be dimmed but we aren’t; we are still here, spreading love and joy this Christmas.
"To the people who took our wreaths and all others driven to desperate measures in these desperate times, if you need our support, our gates are open to you.
"Come and speak to us. We would like to help."
The theft was described as "disgraceful" and "shameful" by dozens of people on Facebook.
Barbara Jones Roberts said: "Absolutely terrible for someone to do that.
"They have no shame."

"Well I hope they bring joy to whoever stole them, because they must have a pretty joyless life to do something like this."
Amy Smith added: "Wow stealing off the Salvation Army.
"Hang your heads in shame whoever has stolen these."
