Strava heatmap shows someone is cutting laps around Pyongyang

When fitness-tracking app Strava plotted more than 1 billion routes taken by its members on a global heatmap, it did a few things.

As Australian university student Nathan Ruser pointed out, the map revealed potentially sensitive information about military bases and supply routes.

It also gave us a look at far-flung parts of the world to see how much running, cycling, "water activities" or "winter activities" were going on there.

First stop, North Korea

Next to the bright lights of South Korea, the stark black of North Korea really stands out.

But you can see there's a speck of activity taking place in the capital, Pyongyang. Here's a closer look:

According to the North Korea Tech website, most of the activity is from visitors and resident foreigners, and some of the activity matches up with the path of the Pyongyang marathon.

Foreigners in North Korea are able to buy SIM cards which give them 3G internet access. But locals are not.

Chernobyl, Ukraine

There's also some activity around the site of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster:

In recent years, tourists have been attracted to the area despite the obvious health risks.

The tracks towards Mount Everest

You'll notice that they seem to fizzle out as they go towards Mount Everest in the middle of the map:

Vastly fewer people make it to the summit (where it looks like there's just a *speck* of activity, though you'll struggle to see it).

Back in Australia at Uluru

People still climb the iconic rock against the wishes of traditional owners:

The Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park board decided unanimously to ban climbing up the rock starting in 2019.

Who runs more? Facebook or Google?

Here's Facebook HQ, California:

And here's Googleplex, California:

Are they fitter than the rest of us? Or do they just wear more trackers?
