Strathearn area in Perth and Kinross to play starring role in last season of hit Netflix royal drama The Crown

The serene hills of Strathearn are set to play a starring role in the last season of popular Netflix royal drama The Crown.

Film and productions crews were stationed in Market Park, Crieff on Thursday with scenes filmed in the surrounding area throughout the day.

A source close to the production said trained gun dogs were used for one scene, which will form part of the hit series’ sixth and final season.

The local spotlight comes after the multi-award winning show’s crew were spotted by pedestrians setting up a major production in St Andrews.

Numerous roads were closed across the town, with filming taking place in the historic Fife town on Friday.

It follows a casting call made by Surrey-based agency Extra People Ltd in January seeking for actors in St Andrews.

Successful applicants could earn as much as £250 per day for a “major TV series for a high-profile streaming service”.

St Andrews University student applicants were “especially welcome” but all adults aged 17 were able to apply.

A St Andrews University spokesperson said: “We are aware that a major production is being filmed in and around St Andrews in early spring, and that a number of local organisations and individuals will be involved and providing support.”

The final season of The Crown will explore the romance between Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The pair met in 2001 when they were both studying at St Andrews University.

Their romance ties in with the show’s planned sixth season timeline, set shortly after Princess Diana’s death in 1997 and continuing until 2005.

The Crown started filming in the summer last year but production was delayed following the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II in September.

Prince William is being played by Ed McVey and Kate Middleton by Meg Bellamy.

The Crown first aired in 2016 and the latest season pulled in 2.8m viewers in the UK alone.

Netflix and Sony Pictures has yet to respond to requests for comment on the filming of the The Crown in and around the Crieff area.
