Strathclyde Uni suspends face-to-face teaching to delay coronavirus spread

Strathclyde University has suspended all face-to-face teaching amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Students will receive lessons online for the remainder of the academic year, principal Professor Sir Jim McDonald announced this moring.

The move follows a similar decision by Glasgow and Glasgow Caledonian Universities.

Professor McDonald explained: "Due to the continued spread of coronavirus COVID-19 and the UK Government’s transition from the contain phase to the delay phase of its response to the outbreak, the University will immediately cease all face-to-face teaching from Monday."

The university campus will remain open, as will student halls, the library, sports centre and student support and welfare services.

Teaching will be delivered via the online platform Myplace to allow students to graduate with the minimum of disruption.

Professor McDonald added: "Our first priority is the health, safety and wellbeing of our staff and students and their families and that will take precedence over all other matters.

"However, I can assure students that we will do everything we can to minimise the disruption to their studies.

“We are continually monitoring and assessing information from the WHO, the UK and Scottish governments, and Health Protection Scotland to inform the implementation of our business continuity plans.

“My thanks and appreciation are extended to the whole University community for their efforts and commitment to Strathclyde and the way we continue to support one another at this challenging time.”

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Scotland currently stands at 121, 31 of them in Glasgow.

Glasgow University confirmed yesterday that three people tested positive for the bug in a statement on social media, explaining they are all currently self isolating.
