Strathclyde Park's annual fireworks display cancelled

North Lanarkshire’s annual fireworks display at Strathclyde Park will not go ahead this year due to concerns over physical distancing.

The traditional event, which attracts thousands of people, will not be taking place this November, as part of the council’s measures against coronavirus.

Councillor Michael McPake, Convener of the Environment and Transport committee, said: “It’s with some sadness that we’ve had to take the decision to cancel the fireworks display for this year.

“It’s certainly not something we have taken lightly and we know that many people will be disappointed, but the safety of our residents is our priority.

“We simply cannot organise events attracting large numbers of people where physical distancing isn’t possible.

“Nearer the time will be work closely with our colleagues in Scottish Fire and Rescue to ensure that fireworks safety messages are promoted to encourage people to behave responsibly.”
