Strathaven school pupils join Climate Action Strathaven for climate strike

Pupils from Strathaven schools got to see democracy in action last week when they were joined on their regular climate strike by Labour MSP Claudia Beamish and SNP MP Lisa Cameron.

Despite the torrential rain and strong winds, a small but determined group gathered in front of the Castle as part of a regular series of global climate strikes.

The pupils – together with members of the local group Climate Action Strathaven – have been gathering regularly to demand more actions on climate from governments in Edinburgh, London and around the world.

The pupils spoke articulately, and the politicians agreed to take their message back to parliament.

Dr Cameron said: “It was important to make time to attend the Climate Action Strathaven event this week and I was pleased to meet with concerned school pupils from Strathaven Academy in attendance, regarding climate change.

“Our rural roads must be improved to facilitate public transport bus routes and I have written to Strathclyde Passenger Transport to request a rural review of public transport across my constituency.”

Ms Beamish, Scottish Labour climate change spokesperson added:“This is a global issue and we have a duty to stand in solidarity with those on the climate frontline – from here in Scotland to the global south.

“I was delighted to be asked to speak at the rally and it was a valuable opportunity to hear the concerns directly from young people and local residents. There are opportunities for local skilled jobs and a better quality of life – from warm homes to good public transport. Let’s all go forward together for our planet and a fair future for everyone – especially the younger generation.”
