Strathaven Park awarded Green Flag for EIGHTH year in a row

Strathaven Park has been awarded a Green Flag award for the eighth year in a row.

It is among 77 Scottish parks to be presented with a Green Flag Award this year by environmental charity, Keep Scotland Beautiful.

The local beauty spot has picked-up the award on a number of occasions previous.

The award acts as a benchmark for recreational outdoor space and celebrates well maintained parks and green spaces and supports the opportunities that they provide to enable exercise, improve mental wellbeing and provide safe spaces for play.

The Green Flag awards celebrate and say a massive ‘thank you’ to those who work tirelessly to give us some fantastic green places to escape to.

The announcement of award winners, normally made in July, was delayed this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Barry Fisher, Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “We’d like to applaud those volunteers and park employees who this year have gone above and beyond to ensure that the green and blue spaces we have come to rely on for our health and wellbeing during this pandemic, have been up to standard.

“We have always recognised the importance of good quality, well managed space, but this year it is has been crystallised as we have sought out local places to exercise in, to spend time with families, and to meet friends in a socially distant way!

“We’re delighted that this year we are able to recognise 77 parks with the Green Flag Award despite the challenges that have been faced.”

Rouken Glen, near Eaglesham and Waterfoot, also won an award (EKN)

Not far from Eaglesham and Waterfoot in East Renfrewshire, Rouken Glen Park was also successful in securing a Green Flag award.

The accolade comes after a recent £3m investment which has seen the creation of a new play park including an accessibility swing, a refurbished visitor centre, new tennis courts and a redeveloped wall garden.
