Strathaven Festivals Group hands out steak pies to elderly in the community

Senior citizens in Glassford were delighted to receive some delicious steak pies and meals thanks to the Strathaven Festivals Group.

Chaired by Councillor Margaret Cooper, it used some of their unspent funding from being unable to run festivals in 2020 to provide a complimentary steak pie for two and oven ready meals to older residents.

Councillor Cooper said: “Often our villages can be forgotten in the rush to support the vulnerable and Glassford has an elderly population and to top it all there is no shop in the village.”

Les Hoggan, the group’s vice chairman, said: “This was all Margaret Cooper’s idea and it was brilliant.

“We liaised with church groups and locals to provide names and addresses and the Glassford Community Group, along with other volunteers from the village and Strathaven, made the deliveries.

“We had tremendous fun in the snow and Councillor Cooper brought along her five-month-old cocker spaniel who everyone knows through his Facebook Page ‘The Adventures of Bertie Dog’. Sadly for him none of the steak pies were dropped!”

Local business supported the efforts of the team by contributing to the price of the food.

This included Alexander’s Butcher in Strathaven and The Tudor Coffee House who produced the fresh food.

Councillor Cooper added: “This was a great community effort helping businesses and senior citizens alike, thank you to everyone involved.”
