Strathaven drug dealer busted by cops

Police arrested a man after a drugs swoop at a house in Strathaven last week.

Cannabis worth more than £500 was seized and Aidan McCarthy, 26, appeared from custody at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He admitted having the Class B drug with intent to supply others at his parents’ home in Redding Road on June 18.

McCarthy also admitted possession of ecstasy.

Jennifer McLaren, prosecuting, said police officers armed with a search warrant arrived at the rented property at 8.45am last Thursday.

McCarthy and his girlfriend were detained, but as a search was about to start he told the officers: “The only drugs here are mine. There is cannabis and eccies in a safe in my room.”

McCarthy was reminded he was under caution and didn’t have to say anything.

He replied: “I know, but I want to get this over with.”

Herbal cannabis contained in several bags was recovered along with seven ecstasy tablets.

McCarthy claimed it was all for personal use, but police also seized mini scales and a grinder that suggested he had been dealing.

Formally charged, he replied: “You’ve caught me in the house. What can I say?”

Ms McLaren said the cannabis recovered was worth up to £530 while the ecstasy tablets could cost £10 each.

Defence solicitor Jackson Bateman said McCarthy had pleaded guilty on the basis that he was supplying friends and was not a commercial dealer.

His client has previous convictions, but there had been a “pause” in his offending until these latest charges.

Mr Bateman added: “He was candid in his attitude towards the police officers who questioned him.”

Sheriff Ray Small pointed out that McCarthy has a previous conviction for being concerned in the supply of cannabis.

He told the accused: “I want a full range of background reports before I sentence you.”

The case was continued until August 14 and McCarthy was given bail to his girlfriend’s address in Wishaw.
