Strathaven Academy make Scottish school league table top 20

Strathaven Academy has made it into the top 20 Scottish schools in an annual performance report.

But just one East Kilbride school appeared in the top 100 – with St Andrew’s and St Bride’s placing 30th.

The league table is compiled by the percentage of pupils gaining five or more Highers at the country’s 339 high schools.

Strathaven ranked 18th with 61 per cent of pupils achieving such grades, with 55 per cent at St Andrew’s and St Bride’s achieving the same.

Duncanrig was the next EK school on the listings, placing in 123rd on 38 per cent, while Calderglen High was 210th, with a 30 per cent achievement rate.

South Lanarkshire Council’s head of education congratulated all pupils on their efforts.

But Lynn Sherry was keen to point out that exam-based attainment was just “one aspect of the tremendous work going on” at her schools.

She said: “These results not only reflect positive outcomes for pupils, but are used by schools to plan for improving and extending the range of opportunities they provide. Whilst exam results are important, they reflect only one aspect of the tremendous work going on.

“Our schools provide a wide range of activities and programmes to enable young people to acquire qualifications, skills and competences and to prepare for life beyond school.”

There was better reading for East Renfrewshire, with Mearns Castle High, St Ninian’s High and Williamwood High placing third, fourth and fifth respectively.
