Strangulation, deprivation of liberty charges for man arrested after Darwin CBD stand-off

Shem Rotuhmah was refused bail in the Darwin Local Court.

The man arrested after a stand-off on the ledge of a Darwin CBD apartment building has been charged with a raft of domestic violence offences, including strangulation and making threats to kill.

Darwin man Shem Rotumah, 30, faced the Darwin Local Court on Friday afternoon and was refused bail until at least next month.

Rotumah sparked a five-hour police operation on Thursday afternoon when he climbed onto a first-floor ledge of the Luma Luma apartment building to escape officers investigating an alleged domestic assault.

He was arrested after eventually surrendering to police and was brought down from the ledge in a cherry picker.

On Friday morning NT Police watch commander Andrew Heath said the man was charged with 18 offences.

"He's now been charged with depriving a person of personal liberty, aggravated assault, make a threat to kill a person," he said.

"He's [also] been charged with a choking, strangling, suffocating offence, damage to property, armed with an offensive weapon, resist lawful application by throwing a projectile at police, assaulting a member of the police force, and disorderly behaviour in a public place."

A police dog handler suffered minor injuries when he was hit with a bottle thrown from the ledge.

Rotumah was refused police bail and remanded in custody after a brief court appearance.

The court heard the next court appearance would be via video link from prison in late November.
