Strangers 'speed date' to make babies in odd new Channel 4 documentary airing tonight

"You can't go on a date and go, 'So, when do you want children?'"

But in a new - and incredibly unusual - Channel 4 documentary airing tonight, strangers are doing just that.

Singletons desperate to have a baby, but avoid the romance, are going 'speed dating' to find their ideal platonic partner.

With the search for love proving tricky, some have turned to co-parenting, which involves two people who are not romantically involved raising a baby together.

While this may seem rare, 70,000 people are currently signed up to sites specialising in co-parenting.

The four-part documentary will follow the journey of a group of single women matched with various men and guided by fertility specialist Dr Marie Wren and matchmaking expert Gillian McCallum.

"Society has changed so much that people struggle to meet somebody to have a child with," Dr Wren explains.

She has set up a blueprint for safe co-parenting schemes for her company, which involves an extensive vetting process.

"All the candidates had multiple interviews and they had to fill out an incredibly detailed questionnaire," she explains of those taking part in the documentary. "The idea was to make sure that each of the candidates was committed."

But one prospective father flippantly tells the camera: "I want to be a dad because I just want mini-mes running around."

While another insists: "I have a deep desire to be a dad - again."

All of the candidates had criminal and medical checks in, what Dr Wren insists, is an "incredibly thorough process".

Meanwhile matchmaker Gillian helps Dr Wren look at the data and match up the potential co-parents.

Tonight, the focus is on 34-year-old professional nanny Venicia and amateur ballroom dancer Sarah, who quiz three prospective fathers.

Will they be successful in finding their baby daddies?
