Stranger Thingsstar Finn Wolfhard has revealed that the scene hinting at Will Byers’ sexuality was initially played a very different way.
One scene from the Netflix show’s third episode, titled “The Case of the Missing Lifeguard”, appeared to hint the character might be gay as Wolfhard’s character Mike Wheeler shouts at his friend, played by Noah Schnapp: ”It’s not my fault you don’t like girls.”
Wolfhard claims that this particular line isn’t as clear-cut as you think considering there were several variants he was asked to deliver.
“There were a lot of different versions of that scene,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. ”We tried, ‘It’s not my fault you don’t like girls yet.’ I don’t even know if it had to do with Will’s sexuality; I think Mike was just mad and listing off a genuine fact that he’s not interested.”
Wolfhard acknowledged that showrunning duo the duffer brothers have “options” in the route they want to take Byers in.
He continued: ”I guess we’ll see what it really meant, but it’s all up to the Duffers and what they want to do.”
The Netflix series has broken streaming records since returning for its third season. A fourth, while unconfirmed, is expected to be announced imminently.
