Stranger Things breaks Netflix records with series 3 launch

Stranger Things season three achieved a record-breaking launch on Netflix, viewed by 40.7 million accounts on the streaming service.

The latest instalment of the Eighties-set sci-fi series, starring British actress Millie Bobby Brown as a youngster with telekinetic powers helping her friends fight a mystery evil, arrived on July 4.

The viewing figures are higher than those of any other film or TV series over a four-day opening, Netflix said. It added that 18.2 million accounts have already watched the entire eight-episode season.

An account is judged to have watched a TV show if it has viewed at least 70 per cent of an episode.

The announcement came as Netflix said it was exploring the idea of sharing more data with the public.

Benjamin King, Netflix’s director of public policy in the UK, said: “We release a top 10 list of shows on a regular basis in the UK … it’s been interesting to see what the impact of sharing that data has been.”

Stranger Things' third season sees Brown reunite with co-stars Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp and Winona Ryder.

Maya Hawke, daughter of Hollywood stars Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, joins the cast as the elusive Robin while Joe Keery returns as fan favourite Steve.
