Stranger Things 3: Robin and Steve almost had a different ending, says star Maya Hawke

Warning: The story below contains spoilers for Stranger Things season three.

Two Stranger Things character came close to ending up together, one of the show’s stars has revealed.

Maya Hawke plays Robin Buckley, a new addition to the cast introduced in the Netflix hit’s third season.

Robin and her ice cream shop colleague Steve Harrington (portrayed by Joe Keery) initially don’t have the friendliest relationship, but they ultimately warm up to each other.

Steve even ends up professing romantic feelings to Robin – at which point she comes out to him as a lesbian.

This decision regarding Robin’s sexuality wasn’t made until the fourth of fifth episode, Hawke told Variety – meaning that Steve and Robin almost experienced a different storyline altogether.

“It was kind of a collaborative conversation, and I’m really really happy with the way that it went,” Hawke told the publication.

Hawke told The Wall Street Journal that the team began reflecting on Robin’s sexuality while shooting the show, and that they eventually came to what felt like an easy decision.

“Throughout filming, we started to feel like she and Joe shouldn’t get together, and that she’s gay,” she said. “Even when I go back and watch earlier episodes, it just seems like the most obvious decision ever.”

Stranger Things season three is out now on Netflix.
