Strange reason why Dublin Airport freezes animal carcasses that they find on runways

Around 31.5 million passengers passed through the gates of Dublin Airport last year, and its popularity keeps on rising.

Over 3,500 people work there, and some of them have the strangest of tasks.

The 31.5 million figure only accounts for welcome guests - and unfortunately the spot also attracts some unwanted critters.

Workers are fighting a constant battle with birds and hares on a daily basis - and the airport's own fire brigade have a number of tactics to keep them at bay.

Anyone who's ever visited will be aware that hares regularly make themselves at home there - but it's the birds that cause the damage to the planes.

Now Dublin Airport's chief fire officer has revealed the strange reason they freeze all the animals that they clear from the runways.

Gerry Keogh told the Irish Times that they average about one bird strike a day, and that's despite playing warning calls, setting off flares, and keeping the grass long to try and keep them away.

Unfortunately because hares love the long grass they get attracted to the grounds, and although they don't cause any danger Keogh said birds are attracted to their bodies whenever they get hit by planes.

He said: "The reason why we have a long-grass policy is that these birds, when they’re in long grass, are afraid of predators. So it deters them for want of a better word.

The hares love long grass.”

He also revealed the reason they freeze all the carcasses of animals they remove.

He said: “We keep everything because the ornithologist will analyse what’s in their tummies to see what’s attracted them to come to the airport."
