Strange coincidence between Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Graeme Sharp goalscoring records at Everton

Everton's current number nine, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, celebrated his 24th birthday today .... four days after he headed the 50th goal of his brief Blues career.

Everton's most prolific post-war number nine, the legendary Graeme Sharp, celebrated his 24th birthday on October 16, 1984 - three days after he had headed the 50th goal of his still short Everton career.

It's a curious coincidence.

But there are other comparisons too - apart from their physical and stylistic similarities.

Calvert-Lewin has turned 24 with 157 senior Everton appearances to his name. Sharp had 147.

Sharp was outstanding in the air, and that is perhaps Calvert-Lewin's greatest quality too.

Both are and were aggressive and capable of unsettling the most physical of centre-backs - and while Sharp had pace, Calvert-Lewin is positively turbo-charged.

But that's where the comparisons cease.

Calvert Lewin has made fewer starts than his imperious predecessor, 113 to 137.

But the biggest difference between both players is in the types of goals they score.

Just four days after his 24th birthday Sharp scored his 51st Everton goal with the long range howitzer he will be remembered for his entire life - a spectacular volley which ended a 14-year victory drought at Anfield.

Even from his earliest days Sharp proved consistently capable of such audacity - witness volleys against Spurs, QPR and Sheffield Wednesday, a long range strike at Southampton and a clever piece of ball juggling on a frozen pitch at Ipswich.

Calvert-Lewin has almost exclusively specialised in one-touch six-yard-box finishes this season.

But he does have variety in his arsenal - witness the touch, run and finish against West Ham United, the 12-yard piledriver against Tottenham Hotspur and an ingenious back heel against West Bromwich Albion.

Adding to his variety of finishes could be a way of edging himself closer to becoming the kind of striker the legendary Sharp became.

And there's another trick Calvert-Lewin could borrow from the great man.

Everton's current club ambassador had been adding to his goals tally from the penalty spot since 1981.

Competition was fierce at the time - Andy King, Kevin Sheedy and Adrian Heath all fancied their chances from 12 yards, and Trevor Steven later joined the penalty prize - but Sharp added seven goals to his tally from the penalty spot by the time he was 24.

Calvert-Lewin has already showed ruthlessness from 12 yards in an England jersey against the Republic of Ireland, to add to the two he converted for England under-21s and the one he slotted in a League Cup quarter-final penalty shoot-out against Leicester City.

If it was good enough for one of the greatest centre-forwards ever to pull on a Royal Blue jersey, it should be something for a young man who aspires to reach those heights to consider also?
